Right Now I'm...

Monday, September 28, 2015

FEELING all the mum feelings after seeing my daughter off on a big adventure. There's a mix of excitement, anxiousness, admiration, curiousness, worry, anticipation and all the rest. It was a 10 hour flight to their first stopover in Singapore and while I lay in bed trying to sleep, I suddenly realised she'd probably forgotten to take her travel sickness meds, so that caused more bad thoughts and broken sleep! Thank goodness for technology and messaging from Singapore and when they finally arrived in Cambodia. She's in 33 degrees of humidity after leaving New Zealand in what has been a chilly start to spring, but about to have some adventures and experiences I'm sure she'll remember for her life and about to make life better for some people there.

WATCHING a bit of the World Cup Rugby - well, I should say watching some of the replays as the games are on during the middle of the night for us. Go All Blacks!

TRYING to get my mind on to finishing my Week in the Life project. I've worked on it in patches but it's hard to get on a roll without allowing a huge chuck of time in one go. Maybe next weekend? Now that the endless list and packing for daughter's trip are done with...

THINKING ahead to 2016 already and excited for a fresh new year and a new start. It's sad that I get to this stage in the year and I'm wishing it done so I can start afresh! Of course I should just get on with new plans right now and I will be, but I think I might take a photography course which starts it's first semester in February. Exciting plans ahead.

EXCITED that  I've already found my One Little Word for next year!

EXPECTING to be inspired by my son who finds all sorts of cool things for me on You Tube and elsewhere. It's school holidays, so I'm expecting to hear "mum, I have something to show you..."

STARTING a new project which is really part of my big dream. I will share more one day but right now, I'm just in the planning stages.

Wishing you all a happy and productive week, wherever you are in the world! What are you excited about?

Project Life | Sep 3

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

I started out adding some of these photos to another spread but woke up one day and decided they needed a special page of their own. This came together really quickly after that. An event, coordinating photos and a Project Life kit that suits pretty much anything... can't beat that combo!

My daughter is about to embark on an adventure. She's part of a school trip going to Cambodia for the school holidays and one day they're making houses in a village. Hence the hammering practice and sore arm muscles! These houses are basically one room on poles but to the families who they are for, mean the world. They will have been saving for years. They also get to visit several orphanages which she's very excited about. There they are entertaining the children, giving gifts of precious supplies and doing some painting maintenance. They will also see some of Cambodia's very special tourist attractions and stop over in Singapore on the way home for a very different experience.

A piece of me will miss her so much and be worried about her, but I also know she'll gain so much from this experience.

And yes, those are physical cards:)

Project Life | Sep 2 - Spring magic!

Monday, September 21, 2015

September arrived with much excitement. My daffodils flowered right on cue for my Week in the Life project at the end of August and into the first days of spring. We have had a smattering of nice weather... right along with a few too many wintery moments, but enough hope for the good things spring brings here.

This layout just came together so fast and I think it's one of my favourites.

My Everyday kit arrived just in time to add some embellishments. It's very hybrid with digital cards and stamps as well.

And a bit of my own handwriting to finish.

Hey, I have another class live

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Today my next class at Big Picture Classes is live! I've loved the whole process of preparing these classes. As anyone who has prepared anything like this before will know, there's a lot of planning and work that goes in, along with a decent chunk of heart and soul! You're never sure if the class participants will connect with your writing/teaching/visual style the way you intended, but at the end of the day, if you know you've helped and inspired people in some way, it's very satisfying.

This class is one of the Pocket Prompt series - Pocket Prompts|08 where I share prompts for both photo ideas and journaling, as well as talking you through how I put the finished Project Life pages together. It's probably the most I've shared about this process so if you want to get an idea of what it's like in my head... haha, just kidding. Seriously though, I've looked through most of the Pocket Prompt classes at BPC and each one brings something very different. So much inspiration and we can all do with fresh ideas.

My other class is still available. I talked about it in this post. It's Self-Portraits - getting yourself in your photos, including lots of considerations on different perspectives, adding mood and atmosphere and project ideas and inspiration. In fact, I need to read over this class again myself to get some of my own ideas fresh in my mind for better memory keeping!

So, if you want to keep learning, exposing yourself to new inspiration and trying new things, then it's well worth a look around the site and taking a free 2 week trial if you're not already a member.

Thanks for stopping by, Donna xx

In my last post I showed you the right side of this layout. I was waiting for my physical Becky Higgins Everyday Edition to arrive. Yes, I have a real kit and the embellishments and I LOVE it! I'm still using the digital version too, but the real cards are just so much better in colour and feel. I've had to let go of my square corner fettish and am adopting Ali Edwards attitude that it doesn't have to be perfect. So straight and/or rounded are the go here now!

Project Life | Capturing the essence

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

While working on my Week in the Life album, one thing that I set out to do intentionally was to endeavour to capture the essence of each of us - the way I see each of us. When I started to think about photos I've been taking otherwise, I know that I'm guilty of taking photos I think look lovely sometimes and I miss the ones that are more meaningful. Maybe because they don't always look so good, or I'm just not intentionally looking for them. It got me thinking about how I capture my everyday.
As we moved from winter to spring in NZ, we've had rain and lots of it. I must say that if I didn't have a dog who follows me around with that pleading look in the mornings, it would be easy to just waive my walk and get on with my day inside. Because of her, I opt sometimes to put on a rain jacket and go. The other day I also took my new umbrella. When I got to the bridge over the stream, I remembered taking an umbrella self-portrait a few months ago during Day in the Life, so I decided - new umbrella - new photo op!

I also thought, it's raining. This is real life. How do I capture this for the album? I don't particularly like rain, but I have to confess I'm fascinated with taking photos after the rain. That's where the real magic lies. So now with more intention, I took a few more photos, which for me, really capture the essence of a rainy day walk and these will be used in my Project Life spread. Because real life around here includes rain... and lots of it! And I have to admit, it's actually fun taking photos on a rainy day. You just have to be a bit more careful with the equipment or wait for it to ease off a bit, as it was this day.

Here's how I'm using the umbrella photo. I decided to crop and make it 9x12 and chose an appropriate quote I love to add. If I'm using pockets, I always drag my 9x12 onto 6x4 templates and have printed out at that size to reduce costs.

I will share the finished pages soon.

All photos taken with the camera I had on hand... my iPhone 5s.

Week in the Life | Making my photo book

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

In my last WITL post, I talked about having thoughts from changing my album to a printed photo book. After mulling this over, yes,  I have changed formats.

First reason, I listened to my heart. Second was that I will eventually have a lineup of photo books on my shelf of specific themes; Week in the Life being one of them.

I made 6x8 books for WITL 2014 and for my December Daily 2014 (which I realised I've never shared here in finished format and I will do soon). For those I used Artifact Uprising and although our NZ$ rate is ghastly against the US$ at the moment and postage is expensive too, I still feel the investment in the same format and quality will pay off. Making an album probably costs around the same in the end.

After a very busy week I only got to play around with my first pages in the weekend and have been trying to find the formula to get my book made quickly but to make it interesting and feel like I've made an effort on it at the end. So far I've made pages from scratch, that is, without using templates. I just got started that way and really just mixing it up as I go.

So above is my cover and this is an introduction page.
And here are some of my Monday pages. I took less photos some days and Monday was one of them.
I may yet add some journaling to this page.
I may yet add the day to the journaling somewhere. I'll decide when I have the other days done.

There are a couple of other pages to follow here which have some quite private journaling.Once I had most of Monday set up, it was quite easy to start putting the other days together.

Here's a look at another page for another day. Of course there's a lot of pages in between!

Products used:
Ali Edwards digital stamps
Love Day Seed digital stamps (Days of week)
Paper from Becky Higgins Project Life Everyday Kit
Plus my own script
